The term Velcro is a contraction of the words velvet and hook. It refers to a fastening system imagined by Georges de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, in 1948. After studying the adhesion of burdock flowers on his clothes and on his dog's fur, he considered that the same system could be reproduced in textile and so he invented Velcro.
